The University of Limerick (UL) was established in 1972 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick, and constituted as the University of Limerick in 1989. Situated in the mid-west region of Ireland, the University of Limerick is an autonomous, internationally focused university. It is a young, energetic and enterprising institution with a proud record of innovation in education and excellence in research and scholarship.
UL has a superb campus of over 130 hectares with outstanding recreational, cultural and sporting facilities which enhance the exceptional learning and working environment. The campus is located 5km from Limerick City and 20km from Shannon International Airport. Adjacent to the University is the National Technology Park (NTP), Ireland's first science/technology park which is home to over 80 organisations.
The University's mission is to promote and advance learning and knowledge through teaching, research and scholarship in an environment which encourages innovation and upholds the principles of free enquiry and expression. Particular attention is paid to the generation of knowledge relevant to the needs of Ireland's continuing socioeconomic development. UL offers a range of programmes up to doctorate and post-doctorate levels in Business, Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, Science & Engineering, Education & Health Sciences, Informatics & Electronics.
The University of Limerick supports links between teaching and research and between undergraduate and postgraduate education. In addition to offering the traditional PhD, the University is now offering structured doctoral degree programmes, which include taught elements in addition to the research-based PhD thesis. In recognising that many doctoral graduates will pursue careers outside of academia, the University provides additional transferable and professional skills training for research students.
