Offer Description

The Centre Jean Pépin is a research unit of the CNRS and ENS-PSL (UMR-8230: https://umr8230.cnrs.fr) specializing in the study of ancient, medieval, and modern philosophical doctrines. Located in Villejuif, our center is affiliated with the Philosophy Department of ENS-Ulm. The Centre Jean Pépin, along with the CECILE center (University of Lille), is one of the two host institutions for the ANR project "Rethinking Modern Politics Through Jewish and Islamic Sources" (REPOLIJIS). As part of the staff of REPOLIJIS, the postdoctoral researcher will work within the Centre Jean Pépin.

The ANR project "Rethinking Modern Politics Through Jewish and Islamic Sources" is an interdisciplinary initiative that aims to study the dynamics created by the encounter between Jewish and Islamic intellectual traditions and modern political thought since World War II. From a comparative perspective, it explores how Jewish and Islamic political thoughts have sought to rethink, challenge, or problematize the key concepts of modern politics.

The postdoctoral fellowship we are offering is associated with the first axis (WP1) of REPOLIJIS, dedicated to the question of sovereignty. The working group formed around this axis will be studying how thinkers from Jewish or Muslim cultures have endeavoured to negotiate (i.e., appropriate, transform, or problematize) the modern conception of sovereignty and the sovereign state by harnessing Jewish or Islamic intellectual traditions.

The main activities are :

·  Research on Islamic or Jewish political thought in the 20th century in relation to the question of sovereignty.

·  Development of a comparative perspective for research on this issue by introducing both Jewish and Islamic sources.

·  Scientific production on the question of sovereignty and from a Judeo-Islamic perspective
